About AMI

There has never been a more exciting time to be in the broadcast industry! Not only are there more opportunities in traditional television and radio than ever before, but with satellite and the internet new jobs are popping up on the daily basis. Traditional radio stations and print publications are now complimented with internet based versions and new specialty channels are constantly being created. The opportunities for trained media professionals are endless.

The philosophy of The Atlantic Media Institute is that students Learn-By-Doing. As part of the program students are directly involved in major news and sporting events from the World Lacrosse Championships to press conferences with the Prime Minister and major police investigations. Students do real television and print stories and do live broadcasts on AMI’s internet radio station.

In operation since 1988, there are AMI graduates working throughout the country everywhere from small markets to directing the number one news program in Nova Scotia.

The Media Arts course is based on two terms of eight months. In the first term students are enrolled in detailed theory sessions which include all of the basics of radio, television, print and photography. Assignments include a developing a CRTC radio application, court reporting, writing for sports and people on the street interviews.

In the second term, students select the area or areas they prefer to major in. Most students select one major area and a minor (i.e. 80% radio and 20% TV).

The Atlantic Media Institute has an exceptionally qualified staff who not only have a media past, but are still actively involved in their fields. Our small class sizes and low instructor-student ratio means a personalized learning environment and more hands-on learning for each student.

Applications are considered on an individual basis. We accept and enroll applicants who exhibit adequate speech, reading and writing skills, have an appropriate educational background and strong drive and motivation. A live audition must be reviewed and approved prior to acceptance.

There is one constant at AMI. In the media business, you have to do it. Students learn from watching others. They learn from books and lectures about the business, but the best way they learn, the fastest, most rewarding and efficient way, is by doing. Gain experience while you learn every day. The AMI way.
